MEDICAL EQUIPMENT PROACTIVE ALLIANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE
The Medical Equipment Proactive Alliance for Sustainable Healthcare (MEPA) is a joint initiative of COCIR, HealthTrust and Vizient, to foster sustainability within healthcare. The Alliance, in consultation with the Global Electronics Council and Kaiser Permanente, developed the “Sustainability Criteria for Purchasing Medical Imaging Equipment” to provide a set of relevant criteria which may be useful for sustainable/green procurement of medical imaging devices.
Based on the “State of Sustainability Research for Medical Imaging Devices”, prepared by the Global Electronics Council® in 2022 the criteria aim to reduce the climate, environmental and social impacts of medical imaging devices supplied to the healthcare sector.
MEPA GUIDANCE ON CRITERIA - Consultation Open until 14 January 2026
The effectiveness of sustainability criteria depends not only on their content but also on their correct interpretation and application. MEPA Supporting Organizations have developed this Draft Guidance to:
Clarifying the Criteria: Providing detailed explanations of each criterion, including their background, purpose, relevance to sustainability, and alignment with international standards or regulations.
Helping Purchasers Interpret Compliance: Offering practical insights into what evidence or documentation can reasonably be expected from tenderers
The Guidance is in a draft format and it will undergo graphic design once approved.
For simplicity, MEPA Organizations have decided to use this consultation also to propose changes to the criteria. Most changes are aimed to improve clarity of the wording. Each change is accompanies by a justification.
